SVTC directors have assigned themselves to committees - they are great vehicles for further in-depth work and involvement. There are three committees available that anyone is welcome to join - and each committee is looking for additional energetic contributors.
- Community Outreach. [ SVTC COC Mission and Vision (pdf) ]
- Organization and Governance
- Events & Programming
If you want to make contact with either, send Nicky a note (firstname.lastname@example.org) She'd love to connect you with one of the committees. All of the SVTC committees were busy over the summer and have work to do for the rest of the year, if you want to engage.
Recently the SVTC Community Outreach Committee (COC) surveyed the tech users and creators, namely teams, programs, non-profits, schools, etc about their needs and options and opportunities for volunteers to engage with them. Many of the organizations, teams, and schools are looking for elbow grease. knowledge, and/or mentoring. There are options to choose from -- they range from a few hours 'one time only' to being involved with a project that lasts a season. There are options to share technology/technical knowlege, options to participate without providing any prior technology knowlege or STEM back ground; --> a custom level of involvement!!
Where / what are these opportunities? When you open the pdf, you'll find info to make contact with:
- several robotics teams at area high schools
- a Maker place in Staunton
- a girls tech summer camp at a community college'
- 1-day camp at JMU (Cyber Day)
- HCPS STEM Day at the mall
- the Valley's FIRST Lego League's (FLL) competition in Nov (or the FLL state-level competition in Dec. in Harrisonburg).
The options are customiziable, and best of all, in many of these cases, you can bring someone along: a teenager or a spouse or friend. You don't have to go by yourself: make it a family event! (And let's not forget. These opportunities are not drudgery, but rather, they are fun and support the future workforce of the Valley, akja the STEM pipeline!
THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIVIUALS TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN OUR LOCAL TECH COMMUNITY. Please take a look at the pdf and make contact, or conact Nicky Swayne to get connected (email@example.com, 540.568.7882)
